Know when to push and know when to kick back.
In order to succeed you know you have to work your sweet tail off, and ultimately work harder and smarter than anyone else – even when no one is watching. You have to be committed, you have to believe in yourself, and you have to be well acquainted with drive. All that goes without saying, but I am willing to bet if that’s you, you may be facing a serious case of burnout. The reason? While you’re out there hustling you may have forgotten one minor detail: life; or more specifically, the need to have flexibility in your dreams to in order to just live a little.
Live And Die By Deadlines
Self-motivation and self-accountability (AKA deadlines) go hand in like Bonnie and Clyde or wine and cheese. You can have one without the other, but the outcome wouldn’t be as legendary. So you schedule your life out and set those freaking deadlines like a champ… But sometimes life gets in the way and some of those deadlines start passing you by. Thoughts like “you are never going to amount to anything” and “you should just give up” start creeping up faster than you can manage, making you feel like you should just give up and crawl into a hole.
If you are at this point of self-loathing already, or are wearily setting those deadlines; your red pen just hovering above your journal knowing that if you do not make this self-proposed deadline you will catch fire or worse: fail at life, stop! Just take a big step back and breathe.
Rigidity Will Not Reign Supreme
Here is the thing with self-propelled success: it is wholly in your hands. This also means, those deadlines that you wrote in red ink were written by you. And yes, there are times when those deadlines do, without a shadow of doubt, need to be met by a specific time. However, with regards to self-inflicted deadlines, nine times out of ten that is not the case. You set a goal for yourself, no one else cares if you meet it.
If at First You Don’t Succeed…
Now here is the fun part – because you are the sole creator of those deadlines, you can change them. This is not an excuse for being a lazy ass. If you want to make shit happen, you need to set reasonable deadlines, and achieve them. However, listening to your inner voice, listening to your body and being flexible when life jumps in the way will be your saving grace in more ways than one.
Life Throws You Punches, Roll With Them
We all get sick, or have a friend in need, or have an amazing opportunity pop up out of nowhere that flushes all of our little deadlines down the toilet. That is life, and sometimes there is nothing any of us can do about it. So give yourself some wiggle room and set reasonable deadlines.
Stop Right There
Our goal in life is to live it to its absolute fullest, to do whatever it takes to make our dreams come true, and enjoy as many steps along the way as possible. Part of achieving your dream life; becoming that wildly successful, happy, and inspiring (fill in the blank), is actually living your life along the way. That means being flexible and not beating yourself up when you miss a deadline or end up having to rewrite your entire game plan.
Embrace The Unexpected
As cliché as it sounds, life really is more about the journey than the destination. So why not enjoy it? Why not make the most of what life throws at you and exercise flexibility? You never know, the very thing you turn down because it doesn’t fit into your strict schedule could end up being the key to unlocking your success. Sounds cheesy, yes, but I dare you to doubt me.
At the end of the day, refrain from beating yourself up when things don’t go as planned, keep your head held high and enjoy the scenery on the way to your dream life. Cause I am willing to bet if you don’t, you may never even notice when your success arrives.
